New movies, thanks to Netflix

Postby rughooker » 18:40 Wed 03 Feb 10

We got a flat screen tv for Christmas and we boosted our viewing capabilities with a blu-ray player that is part of a PlayStation 3. What also came with it was the ability to hook up to Netflix. We have both the mail-in service where you put movies you want to see on a queue, and you can also go online for streaming movies that you can watch at your convenience. Many of those are high-def, which is great. And the subscription price is about $10 a month.

So in the past two months we have seen more movies than I have seen in the past several years! It's nice, because there are a lot that aren't available at our library and we can't buy a lot of new blu-ray ones. That retail library is pretty small yet; a lot of classics still aren't available.

For the first time in a long time, I've actually watched quite a few of the movies that have been nominated for the Oscars. And I've gone back to see some films I never saw before. It's the coolest thing ever!

We have seen:

Inglourious Basterds
District Nine
Up
Benjamin Button
Burn After Reading
Bullitt
Cool Hand Luke
Psycho
Star Trek (new one)
Independence Day
All of the Die Hards
Mama Mia (yuck)
Man on Wire
Australia
and lots more!

Today we got The Hurt Locker, which we'll probably watch on Friday night. I can't wait!

There are a couple Brad Pitt movies on that list that I'd like to see... maybe in 10 years or so. That's usually how far behind current times I find myself. ;)

I'm a big fan of Brad Pitt, but I came late to his fan club. I thought he was really good in Inglourious Basterds, in Mr and Mrs Smith, and Benjamin Button. He plays a screwball in Burn After Reading, but he was good at it. One of my favorites is The Mexican, with Julia Roberts. I love that movie.

He has a pretty long resume as an actor, but stuff like A River Runs Through It or the movie he made about Tibet didn't do much for me.

Aww... that's too bad. A River Runs Through It was a good movie. To each their own. I also liked Seven Years In Tibet. ;) My fav Brad Pitt movie will always be Legends of the Fall, though.

I liked both River and 7 Years In Tibet, but Legends Of The Fall was one which simply never worked for me. Different strokes, I guess. Glad you're enjoying your new toys, Donna!

Just finished watching The Hurt Locker. Best Picture. Really, really good film; great acting, very gripping story. Of Inglourious Basterds, Up, District Nine, The Hurt Locker is my pick. You guys will love this movie. And I'm not a fan of war movies, but this is an inside look at Iraq and what the soldiers have to deal with. When it becomes available to rent, definitely get it.

Won't see Avatar because I cannot abide James Cameron. I would love to see the director of Hurt Locker win: she used to be married to Cameron.

I did not enjoy 'Basterds' at all, what turned me off is the having to read the subtitles. I am smart enough to know that they are supposedly speaking German, French, etc. Maybe the actors were not good enough to ignore when others were supposedly speaking in another language? :dunnu:
I like foreign language films & don't mind reading their subtitle's.

As for Cameron, ignore him & see Avatar it is that good as the Box Office is confirming.

We watched a sci-fi movie last night and it was really, really good. It's called "Moon" and it came out last summer. It won several British film awards for the director and for the actor. It's a small budget picture, relatively speaking, but it's done brilliantly. If you get a chance to see it or rent it, I highly recommend it.
